Webinar: Catholic Press Association
October 23, 2014
I was very excited to present a webinar for the Catholic Press Association (CPA) on Thursday October 23, 2014. Thanks to Peter Finney from the Clarion Herald in New Orleans for the invitation and to Tom Ryan from the Loyola Institute for Ministry in NOLA for hosting and facilitating the webinar.
The topic of the webinar is "Transitioning your online newspaper to an income-generating online Catholic news platform."
Resources to review prior to the webinar are at the bottom of this post.
Scot Landry will apply best practices from his recent study of successful online platform businesses to the ministry of Catholic newspapers. He will identify 25 ways to generate additional income for Catholic diocesan news ministries. The key is that they think of themselves as an online Catholic news platform instead of the online edition of a Catholic newspaper.
Blending several passions and experiences:
This webinar (growing revenue for Catholic newspapers through the introduction of a Catholic Community Online Platform) brings together several aspects of my professional experience and interests:
Passion for good formational and informational resources for the Church.
Belief that strong Catholic media and Catholic newspapers/news organizations are critically important to the Church.
Passion for marketing and engagement (my first professional roles were in marketing/brand management)
Familiarity with strategic issues facing newspapers, principally because The Pilot Newspaper was part of the Secretariat for Catholic Media that I led for 5 years and because my twin brother (Fr. Roger Landry) served as the Executive Editor of The Anchor (Diocese of Fall River) for 7 years.
Knowledge of new media, having been asked to form a New Media Group at the Archdiocese of Boston (recently published a book related to this, Transforming Parish Communications: Growing the Church through New Media)
Knowledge of fundraising and parishioner engagement, due to my four years as Secretary for Institutional Advancement at the Archdiocese of Boston and my work consulting with parishes and other Catholic organizations and fundraising.
and most importantly...
Recent research on financially successful online community platforms (Jeff Walker - Launch, Michael Hyatt - Platform, Brendon Burchard - Millionaire Messenger) and brainstorming on how this could be applied in the Catholic Church generally and for Catholic newspapers specifically.
